To be or Not To Be Organic?

There has been much written these days on the virtues of living an Organic lifestyle. To some people who extol the health benefits of living a totally organic way of life, the idea borders on almost a kind of religion. Others just occasionally buy Organic food or Green personal and home products, and feel they are doing their part in living just a bit healthier while also doing their part to save the environment. The level or degree to which a person may go in their decision to be organic as you can see varies greatly.

What does the term “Organic” mean? Well, it depends on whom you ask. It can mean anything that contains carbon. To a scientist, carbon, is the mark of any living organism. That is the technical description of Organic. However, to most people when speaking about food, “organic” suggests that only natural, non-synthetic substances are involved in the production of that food. Generally, “organic” means that the food has been grown in safe and healthy soil using natural fertilizers – free of synthetic pesticides or additives. You must clearly understand the major difference between labeling on the box. The terms All Natural, No Artificial Ingredients, 100% Organic does not guarantee anything. It must be marked “Certified Organic”. Most people are under the impression that “Certified Organic” food products are too expensive. Others have a lack of trust as to what they are truly buying when it comes to Organic fruits and vegetables, dairy, whole grains, meats, poultry and other organic food items. The problem with the “certified organically grown” designation is that the 44 certifying agencies around the U.S. have different standards, and that does not take into account what the term Organic means when traveling outside of the United States. This can certainly pose a problem to those of us who have made the choice to live organically. So even with all the regulations, consumers can’t determine exactly what they’re buying. Actually, much of the “organic” food in today’s markets are not marked “certified,” making it even more difficult to know what you’re getting for the extra money you’re paying.

The same can be said for purchasing Organic personal and home products. How can you be sure that there are no additives or dyes in the soaps, lotions and cotton clothing that you are buying? Many parents take pride in the fact that they have chosen to give their baby or young child a totally Organic start in life. Paying a bit more for Organic Baby Mattresses, Baby Apparel, Baby Accessories and Natural, Green Toys is a true comfort to them and is a lifestyle decision made not by money alone. I guess you could say, this is where the trust factor comes in. You have to take the time to read the labels carefully and make sure you are purchasing your products from a reputable source. Most merchants would never take the chance of switching labels to get a higher price for goods marked “Certified Organic” – since Tophealthspot is a big supporter of most Organic and Green merchants, we offer one of the best and largest selections of genuine “Certified Organic” products.
