Wonderful Health Benefits for Pet Owners

Did you know that just by owning a pet you can substantially increase your quality of life?

Pets can help your physical and mental well being. I know that many of you reading my blog who have had the pleasure of per ownership - now or at any time in your life - can readily agree and look back on that pet with some loving memories...Never have I ever had a conversation with a pet lover who had anything negative to say about their experience with their furry or feathered friends – granted they try your patience at time, but the joy surely outweighs the bad.

The keen natural instincts of dogs are used worldwide to; help the blind, find lost people, and sniff out both explosives and drugs at airports to keep us all safe from harm. And all they ask in return for uncompromising loyalty is a heartfelt hug and genuine praise for their service.

Research led by Dr. Karen Allen at the University of New York at Buffalo shows clinical results that pets can help lower your blood pressure. Stock Brokers with high blood pressure were studied to see what happened over an elapsed period of time after they adopted a dog or cat. They concluded that having the pet near by helps control an increase in blood pressure due to stress.

Owning a dog for instance will encourage you to get out and get more exercise. Walking is one of the best activities you can do! The best thing is that you and your friend can set your own pace. While out of the house and walking you are also more likely to socially interact with your neighbors. Ever heard the saying; "puppies are great chick magnets?" Well, same thing goes for you gals out there too!

Pets have a tremendous impact on mental health. It is said that the love of a loyal pet can help their owner through the toughest of times...Here are two statements to ponder:

• English poet Alexander Pope has stated that history is full of examples of the fidelity of dogs than that of friends.
• According to an old Chinese proverb; "Dogs have many friends because they wag their tails, not their tongues!"

Pets can lessen the tension between family members and turn a tense union into a fun time. They are known for bringing unconditional love to the home in which they live. When pets do cute and funny things - which they often do – family members react by laughing and in turn becoming more relaxed.

I remember when my grandmother was ill and in a Nursing Home. There were some adorable cats that were adopted from the local pound. They would roam the halls and make a friend of even the patients with the hardest of hearts. If any of you have ever had loved ones of friends in such a facility, then you know how hard it is to come by a smile.

If you have never had a pet or do not own one right now, consider making one part of your life. Make sure you have the time and resources necessary to provide a stable and loving environment. Remember, you will reap the benefits of unconditional love, companionship, loyalty and relaxation in return.

Have a healthy day!
